History

Jeff Bezos had made a fortune in books. For many years he was the best supplier of paper on the Internet. Then iPod and iTunes were released in 2001.

These inventions took away a good portion of Amazon’s Music and CD revenue. At the same time, people started viewing the delivery of content in different way. Now people could receive content in the form of files instead of storing the same on some external medium such as CDs.

In 2004, Jeff Bezos launched Amazon Kindle. This was just like iPod but for books. This used technology e-ink for displaying content. This technology reduced eyestrain for the reader. The product delivery was also instant and customers did not have to wait too long.

The first model of Kindle became so famous that Amazon soon came with other models. These were Kindle 2 and Kindle DX. The most important improvement in these models was the display in 16 shades of gray. The old version of Kindle displayed only in four shades of gray. The screen was also widened, thus increasing readability.

Competitors of Amazon Kindle

Since Kindle had gained sizable demand in market, competition was sure to come up. Many brands launched eBook reader in the market and were in competition with Amazon Kindle.

In 2006 Sony released eBook reader but wireless connectivity was not included in this. Also no online store integration was available as in case of Amazon.

Another competitor is Google. They scanned the books and digitized all the books that had been printed. Google has in all, nearly 3 million books in its library. You can purchase the access to copies of the book through Google book search. Google does not have eBook reader currently, but if they come up with one, then Kindle’s revenue will fall drastically.

Another competitor is Apple. The iPhone of apple has an application which allows reading books through Kindle accounts.

Apple is working towards table type laptop that will be dual mode in nature. It would work as E-Ink in one mode and PC in other mode. Hence it is for sure that market in future will be crowded with many eBook readers.

Amazon recently made a blunder by deleting 2 books without giving fair notice to customers. This created lot of issues among customers. Hence before spending on the eBook reader just confirm the privacy of the same.
