This one looks like a “serial killer novel”, but because of its well crafted thrill, the book actually lifts up the genre it comes from. “The pawn” has some believable characters and original villains which make this one a fresh read in a very tried and tested genre.
Patrick Bowers struggles to understand his wife’s death and his strained relationship with his step-daughter. He also has the task of tracking down a murderer who leaves chess pieces at the site of each murder.
What makes this book different from others in its category is its manner and style of presenting facts. James puts it together with historical mysteries and various conspiracy theories. You can’t help caring for those being victimized by the killer.
The reader is caught in the veil of deception. We care about Patrick Bowers. We want him to solve it. We care for the future victims. We want to prevent them from this maniac killer.
The book has some gory scenes that you might want to stop reading, fearing nightmares. It is indeed a superb thriller. It is something you hate, but you love hating.
Agent Patrick Bowels has a strong character etched for him in the book. His specialty in environmental criminology is a very “of the time” thing, considering the environmental issues of the times we are in.
There are numerous attractive characters in the book, one of them being Tessa. The narrative is such that all of these characters just come to life in front of you. You expect to meet them one fine day.
Steven James makes the reader feel as if he is reading a personal account of the story. The story gains attentiveness from the reader. He is forced to think the various and underlying meaning of the simple word “pawn”. The author brings North Carolina to life in the eyes of the reader.
