For those who know, and, for those who don’t know much about Amish culture and life, this is one book that has a perspective to the Amish life never before portrayed. Suzanne W Fisher, the author of The Choice, has with great sensitivity, captured the core values and feelings of a young Amish girl and the choices she has to make.

Amish life is not just full of rules and regulations, and this is aptly demonstrated in The Choice. Book One, in the Lancaster Series, The Choice, is set in the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The protagonist, Carrie, is on the brink of leaving the community to marry her sweetheart, Solomon Riehl, who during his rumspringa, (the time when the young ones are permitted to experience the outside world if they want to before they commit to the church) decides to leave the group and join the baseball team.

But tragedy strikes, and Carries makes her first choice – to stay with her family rather than go with Solomon. She then marries a man her father chooses, when she does not hear from Solomon. And just when the two are settling down to a relationship that was absent in the initial years of the marriage, tragedy strikes again, leaving Carrie to once again make a choice.

The novel has the traditional Amish theme – the girl has the choice to be with the community or leave the community. Despite having the traditional theme, Suzanne, the author, has been able to surprise the reader. It is this intriguing manner of prose that makes you realize this novel is not any run-of-the-mill Amish literature.

Yes, it does mention the common threads of information about non-electrified homes, carriages and horse, yet, the warmth, the understanding, and the space that is given to someone who is undecided without putting pressure, is something we can all learn to inculcate.

One of the many books that should be read before one dies, is Gulliver’s Travels. As a child, Gulliver’s Travels is full of imagery and one is fascinated by visuals that accompanied the stories. The most famous of his travels was the “Lilliput” story and the “Brobdingnag” story.

However, in this edition of Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, you get to read a more in depth version and an understanding of its place in English classical literature. His satire of English and European governments, societies, and culture, can now be thoroughly enjoyed as adults, more worldly wise.

In the first section, Gulliver, a ship’s surgeon, finds himself shipwrecked on the island of Lilliput. Here he is akin to the weapon that can be used to destroy one’s enemies, and wanted by islanders from Lilliput as well Blefufeu. This is a satire on English politics and wars of those days, but has in it a message for today as well. The second section is a satire on European governments. Gulliver finds himself in Brobdingnag, where he is among giants and a helpless victim. In the third section, entitled, “A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Gluggdubdrib and Japan”, is the least known, unfortunately. It is full of inventions, creativity and imagery, and historical figures! The final section, “A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms”, Gulliver is on an island where there are the Yahoos, a human like race, who embody all the vices that humans are known to have. Alongside them, lives the horse like race that embodies beauty as well as intelligence. Swift uses Gulliver to help us question ourselves, our knowledge and its use and also treat with dignity the nobility of animals.

A reread of Gulliver’s Travels as an adult, will relive the innocence of childhood and a more mature way of understanding life around you.

“The girl who kicked the Hornets’ nest” is the perfect end to the trilogy Larsson has given us. It is so difficult to even think that the book could have had some other ending. It will bring tears to your eyes.
You will enjoy reading things from Lisbeth Salanders’ perspective. But it is highly recommended to read the first two books in order to understand all the characters in their complete shades. The author has by the third book of this trilogy mastered the art of playing with rhythms, timings, and words.
This book would well end up playing the benchmark role for mystery thriller over the next few decades. But the bad news is that you cannot have more of it due to the unfortunate death of Larsson. We will never again be bestowed with such thrilling storytelling.
“The girl who kicked the hornets’ nest” ties up many loose ends throughout the book. More and more characters are introduced as we go ahead reading it. In fact, the last two hundred pages make it hard to put down.
It is a tale of the good versus the evil. You can call it a series of conspiracies and how they cover the Swedish democracy. It is very interesting to observe how the protagonist became what she became. And what will become of the people who tried to destroy her. Will they win? All this and more, the book promises a captivating read.
The theme of the book, more than anything else is – women are equals. The violence which the book showcases is very well believable. It is easier for people to believe those in power than question the truth. The book will show this right in your face. It will make you challenge what you thought could never have happened.
The young girl gives us hope and strength to search for justice and believe that the world is indeed a good place to live in.

Can Reading Devices and Electronic Book Readers Replace Books?

This is quite a contentious issue and the idea of completely digitizing the worlds book back catalog and releasing everything in future purely into digital form is not a popular option for many people. However if every book was co-released with a digital version available this may see more people jumping into the electronic book reader world and discarding the books in hard copy.

It’ll depend largely on what and how you read as to whether this is a true option for you. If you read a lot of novels and find that your house is filling up with books to the point that it is becoming a fire hazard, you might find yourself in a position where considering becoming a digital book reader is a good idea.

Generally people are quite hesitant with new technology and this will hold some people back. Having these readers available to test in public places would probably help the process along. Libraries could have licenses and they could rent books digitally – this would mean that they could stay open and there would be no more loss when books aren’t returned – they could simply be wiped from your device after a certain period.

As any library user would know, the quality of books borrowed can vary immensely. Even relatively new books are sometimes full of stains, sticky residues and previous borrowers’ thoughts and opinions on the topic all included in the pages. People tend to be rougher with library books and don’t help to preserve their quality.

Because of this libraries find their books deteriorate quite quickly and this isn’t the best experience for a reader. Electronic book readers take care of that and there is nothing to worry about in future when reading a book. Luckily for the children of this generation technology is still in the midst of its revolution. New products are appearing all the time and they are updated as fast as they can be made. The Kindle is a good example of this. In less than a year it’s had two updates and there are now two options to choose from just out of Amazon if you’re in the market for an electronic book reader.

The newest release is the Kindle DX. This is definitely the big brother to Kindle 2, in size and function. However this also applies with regard to price.

This may change as newer options are released but at the moment you definitely pay for the extra features. It weighs about as much as a standard book, and has Amazon’s innovative screen technology that makes it feel as though you’re reading a genuine hard copy book rather than a computer screen.

Amazon is currently undertaking some market research at a number of colleges in the U.S. These include University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and the students here have been given a Kindle DX electronic book reader to use and see how they go with college work using it. Hopefully from this and other similar studies Amazon will produce an option designed specifically for the students.

If so, the college experience could be changed in a way that no one else has affected it in decades. The larger screen and capability to hold thousands of texts at once means that the Kindle could become the electronic book reader that replaces books in colleges all around the world. Students could store their text books from previous years to look back on and use this as their main learning tool.

It remains to be seen what exactly will come of the study but hopefully it’ll lead to some improvements that will make electronic book readers a vital piece of technology in school.
